Public Service Broadcasting and Maccabees

I remember the cards you used to get in CDs that let you sign up to band's mailing lists. They'd ask you how often you bought CDs and what your other favourite bands. Presumably so they could get support act ideas. These two bands probably wouldn't have featured together on many of those cards but I bet they share some fans. Public Service Broadcasting remixing Marks To Prove It by Maccabees seems a genius move if you ask me. Does it work? Judge for yourself.

A quick playlist for the holidays

In order for me to attempt to get some use out of my (increasingly) neglected iPod, I tend to put short playlists together of tracks that I'm currently listening to, so that I can turn the radio off on the way to work and enjoy some cool tunes without the banal chat you tend to get in the morning. My commute is less than an hour, so between 10 and 20 tracks does it perfectly.

So that I can keep up my promise of at least one post per week, I've decided to post this playlist to keep your appetites whetted before I share with you best single and best album of 2011 (due to be posted between Christmas and New Year).

Anyway, this is the playlist that will be on repeat when Mrs Schönberg and I take the Schönberinos down to see Jal and Co for Christmas. It is made up in the main of tracks introduced to me by the great man himself.

Let me (and Jal) know if any take your fancy. Enjoy!

Blue Cassette - Friendly Fires
True Romance - Citizens!
Think Tank - Coastal Cities
The Dark - Peace
Origins - Tennis
Death by Diamonds and Pearls - Band of Skulls
Lonely Boy - Black Keys
Raw Meat - Black Lips (with thanks to Fuck Yeah! Go Team!)

(I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing by Field Music
If you hurry, you can download this fantastic track for free from the band's website here.

Mini Album Review Week - Quick Round Up

A quick round up on the other albums I've not had chance to post about.

The Maccabees - Wall of Arms
With the help of Arcade Fire's producer clear from the very start of the album you start to forget that they actually need the talent behind them to produce that sound. A quality addition to my CD collection, with Can You Give It? as my personal favourite. They're touring all over the UK and Europe from now until Christmas.

Red Light Company - Fine Fascination
Catchy pop songs in the form of Meccano and Scheme Eugene are accompanied by middle of the road music. Sometimes you can stand in the middle of the road and nothing hits you...

MP3: Scheme Eugene (James Yuill remix) - Red Light Company

Cloud Cult - Meaning of 8
Not a new album but after playing Feel Good Ghosts to death I bought my wife (read me) their previous album, Meaning of 8. If you like Feel Good Ghosts then this is another one for your collection with highlights including Chain Reaction, Pretty Voice, Take Your Medicine and Chemicals Collide.

MP3: Pretty Voice - Cloud Cult

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below
I only received this the other day so perhaps I've not given it the listens it deserves yet. It's hippy rock, great for a road trip in the sun. They have managed something quite difficult, creating an album with a variety of songs yet not losing their overall sound.

Can You Give It - The Maccabees

I've got a few songs off The Maccabees first album but have never really got them. I wasn't that bothered when I heard they'd got a new album out but reading on likesounds.com (I think) that it had been produced by the same guy who had produced Arcade Fire got my interest. The result is a British version of Arcade Fire, well to a point, it certainly ticks all the right boxes for me. So much so that I have now ordered the album.
